Will I get the amount I asked for?
Almost always: in 99% of deals the founder got the full amount or more. The negotiation is about equity.
Deals got the money; the equity is what moved
We compared the amount asked with the amount in the final deal for 163 deals. In 99% of them the founder got the full amount or more. In 23% the investors put in more money than the founder asked for, usually in exchange for a bigger share. Only 1% of deals came in below the ask.
So the amount is rarely what changes. The equity is. The median founder in these deals gave away 2.0× the share they first offered. That is how the valuation comes down while the cheque stays the same.
What to do: decide in advance the largest share you would give for the money you need. That number, not the amount, is what you will negotiate.
